God, I hate that parking lot.
Even now, driving past my old corporate office in Austin makes my stomach clench. But back in November 2014, I was sitting in my Honda Civic after another soul-crushing meeting, mascara running down my cheeks, thinking I might actually lose my mind if I had to sit through one more PowerPoint about quarterly projections.
My hands were shaking as I gripped the steering wheel.
Not from cold, it was Texas, after all, but from this overwhelming sense that I was suffocating in a life that looked perfect on Instagram but felt like prison on the inside.
“There has to be more than this”, I whispered to my reflection in the rearview mirror. “Please tell me there’s more than this”.
That breakdown was actually my breakthrough, though I didn’t know it yet.
After nearly ten years of helping people navigate their own transformations, I can spot the signs a mile away.
The restlessness.
The questioning.
The feeling like you’re going to explode if you have to pretend everything’s fine for one more day.
You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?
That persistent feeling that you’re meant for something bigger, something different, something that actually matters. Maybe you’re scrolling through social media at 2 AM, wondering how everyone else figured out their purpose while you’re still stuck in the same patterns. Maybe you’re having those weird dreams where you’re doing work that lights you up, then waking up to an alarm that feels like a death sentence.
I’ve been there. Hell, I lived there for years.

It’s a process, and there are specific signs that show you’re ready to stop settling and start actually living.
Sign #1: You Feel Like You’re Dying Inside Despite Looking Good on Paper
This one nearly killed me.
Literally.
I had everything I thought I wanted — decent salary, nice apartment, friends who envied my “stable” life. But every morning when that alarm went off, I’d feel this crushing weight on my chest, like someone was sitting on my lungs.
I remember lying in bed thinking, “I have a college degree, a good job, health insurance. What’s wrong with me?”
The guilt was almost worse than the misery.
How ungrateful could I be? People would kill for my life, and here I was, crying into my coffee every morning.
But here’s what I learned through years of inner work:
It doesn’t care that your parents are proud or that you look successful at your high school reunion. When you’re living out of alignment with who you truly are, your inner wisdom will sound the alarm bells until you listen.
I worked with this woman last year — brilliant marketing executive, beautiful family, gorgeous home in the suburbs. She came to me because she kept having panic attacks in the Target parking lot.
“I should be happy,” she kept saying. “I have everything I ever wanted.”
That’s the thing about soul-level dissatisfaction—it doesn’t make logical sense. You can’t think your way out of it or gratitude-journal your way through it.
It’s your authentic self saying, “Hey, we’re not supposed to be here. This isn’t our path.”
The panic attacks stopped when she finally admitted she’d rather be teaching art to kids than managing marketing campaigns.
Sometimes your breakdown is actually your soul’s way of breaking you open to new possibilities.
Sign #2: You’re Questioning Everything You Used to Believe
Oh boy, this phase made my head spin.
It was like someone had pulled the rug out from under everything I thought I knew about success, relationships, money, happiness — all of it. I’d be at dinner with friends listening to the same conversations about climbing the corporate ladder and buying bigger houses, and I’d think, “But why? Who decided this was the point of life?”
I started questioning beliefs I’d never even realized I had:
The idea that you have to suffer to succeed.
That wanting more money makes you greedy.
That if you’re not stressed and busy, you’re not working hard enough.
These weren’t even my beliefs, they were hand-me-downs from my family, my culture, my past experiences.
The questioning phase can feel terrifying because it’s like dismantling your entire identity. I remember calling my mom, crying, “I don’t know who I am anymore.”
She thought I was having a breakdown.
Maybe I was.
But sometimes you have to fall apart to discover who you really are underneath all the shoulds and supposed-tos.
I became obsessed with personal development books, meditation, anything that challenged conventional wisdom. My friends thought I’d joined a cult. But really, I was just remembering that I had choices.
That the way I’d been living wasn’t the only way to live.
This is when you start asking dangerous questions like, “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?” or “What would I choose if I didn’t care what anyone thought?”
These questions will crack you open in the best possible way.
Sign #3: You Keep Getting These Nudges About Something Bigger
The calling started as whispers for me.
I’d be blow-drying my hair and suddenly have this vision of myself speaking to a room full of people about transformation. I’d be at the grocery store and get this overwhelming urge to write about mindset work.
Random ideas would pop into my head about how I could help people change their lives.
At first, I brushed these off as fantasies. Me, help people? I couldn’t even help myself.
But the nudges kept coming, stronger and more insistent.
I’d wake up with entire blog posts downloaded into my brain. I’d have conversations with strangers who’d end up spilling their life stories to me, then saying, “You should be a coach or something.”
The calling rarely comes with a detailed business plan. It’s more like a magnetic pull toward something you can’t quite name yet.
You might feel drawn to learn new skills that have nothing to do with your current job.
You might start having dreams about creative projects.
You might find yourself researching careers you’ve never considered.
I had a client who kept getting urges to take photography classes, even though she was an accountant. She kept dismissing it as a hobby until she realized her soul was calling her to document stories of healing and transformation.
Now she’s a successful photographer specializing in cancer survivors.
That “random” interest wasn’t random at all.
The key is to start following these nudges, even if they seem impractical.
Take the class. Start the blog. Volunteer for the cause.
Your soul is trying to show you something important.
Sign #4: You Can’t Tolerate Mediocre Anymore
This shift hit me like a freight train.
Things I used to accept — toxic work environments, draining friendships, negative self-talk — suddenly became unbearable. I remember being at a happy hour where everyone was complaining about their jobs, their spouses, their lives, and I wanted to scream, “Then change it!”
It wasn’t that I became judgmental. I’d been doing the same thing for years.
But something had shifted in me.
I no longer had the energy to participate in conversations that drained my soul. I wanted to talk about possibilities, dreams, what was working in our lives.
This intolerance for mediocrity shows up everywhere:
You might find yourself ending relationships that no longer serve you.
Speaking up when you used to stay quiet.
Refusing to settle for “good enough” in your career.
Setting boundaries you never had the courage to set before.
I started saying no to things that didn’t light me up. Social events that felt obligatory. Projects that bored me to tears. People who only wanted to gossip and complain.
It felt selfish at first, but I realized I was just making space for things that actually mattered.
This phase can be lonely because you’re changing faster than the people around you.
But here’s what I learned:
Better opportunities. Deeper relationships. More fulfilling work.
Sign #5: The Universe Starts Sending You Signs
Okay, this might sound woo-woo, but stick with me.
When you’re ready for transformation, synchronicities start showing up everywhere. It’s like the universe is conspiring to support your growth, sending you exactly what you need when you need it.
These might be:
Repeated number sequences.
Meaningful conversations with strangers.
Stumbling upon resources that perfectly address your current challenges.
Books literally fall off shelves. You meet someone who has the exact expertise you need. Opportunities appear that seem too perfect to be coincidence.
I’ll never forget the synchronicities that led me to my spiritual teacher in 2015. Within one week, three different people mentioned the same meditation center. I found a flyer for a workshop in my mailbox—addressed to the previous tenant. I heard a radio interview with the teacher while stuck in traffic.
The universe was practically hitting me over the head with a sign.
These aren’t just random occurrences. They’re your higher self and the universe working together to guide you toward your next level of growth.
The trick is learning to recognize and trust them.
I’ve noticed that synchronicities increase when you’re in alignment with your true path. The more you trust your intuition and take inspired action, the more the universe responds with support and guidance.
Pay attention to recurring themes in your life:
What books keep being recommended?
What conversations keep coming up?
What opportunities keep presenting themselves?
These aren’t coincidences — they’re breadcrumbs leading you toward your transformation.
What to Do When You Recognize These Signs
If you’re reading this thinking, “Holy crap, this is me,” then congratulations — you’re ready for something beautiful.
But I also know it can feel overwhelming.
Where do you even start when you’re ready to transform your entire life?
Here’s what I wish someone had told me when I was crying in that parking lot: Start where you are.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to quit your job tomorrow or make dramatic changes overnight.
Transformation is a process, not an event.
Begin with small, consistent actions that align with your inner knowing:
Maybe it’s starting a daily meditation practice.
Journaling about your dreams.
Having honest conversations with trusted friends about what you’re feeling.
Maybe it’s taking a class, reading books that inspire you, or simply giving yourself permission to dream again.
The most important thing is to trust yourself. You have everything within you to create the life you desire.
The signs you’re experiencing aren’t accidents — they’re your soul’s way of saying, “It’s time to remember who you really are.”
Through my journey since 2015, I’ve witnessed incredible transformations happen when people finally listen to these inner signals:
- The woman who left her corporate job to become a healer.
- The man who ended his toxic marriage and found true love.
- The mother who started the nonprofit she’d been dreaming about for years.
